The Theology Department offers students a faithful but critical consideration of the Judeo-Christian tradition. The program provides a forum for considering the transcendent and ultimate questions of human existence and prepares men and women for a variety of ministries within the Church. The major and minor programs both require specific liberal education courses in history and philosophy.

Philosophy Minor
The Philosophy minor program gives students an opportunity to examine the fundamental questions of human existence through courses on great philosophical thinkers and important philosophical issues. The program places special emphasis on a knowledge of the historical origins of the Western philosophical tradition and on the development of skills of philosophical analysis.

The Department of Religious Studies does not offer a terminal Masters. If you are interested in obtaining a Masters of Arts in Religion (MAR) or a Masters in Divinity (M.Div) please contact the Yale Divinity School.

The Department of Religious Studies maintains strong ties to a number of other departments in Yale College and the Yale Graduate School, including American Studies, Classics, East Asian Languages and Literatures, History, Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, and Philosophy. A number of faculty members in Religious Studies hold joint appointments in other departments.

Faculty and students in Religious Studies programs are able to take advantage of Yale’s rich resources, including six major libraries. One of the world’s finest libraries for the study of religion is located at the Yale Divinity School. Degree of Religious Studies at Fordham University

Monday, March 16th, 2009

The interdisciplinary program in religious studies investigates the roles, meanings, history and phenomenology of religion. Some courses (for the most part those offered through the theology department) focus on the religious traditions themselves, their classical texts, historical figures and movements, conceptual and affectual concerns, ethical and social teachings, cultural and political impacts. Other courses (for the most part those offered by other departments) identify the significance of religion and of religious ideas and symbolism within the wider world of history, society, literature, and the arts.

All students interested in majoring, second majoring, or minoring in religious studies should discuss their interests with the director. In consultation with the director, each student will develop a program of study. It is important to note that the courses listed Religious Studies Courses page are only representative of the choices available. Consultation with the director is necessary in order for students to have full access to other courses that fulfill major, second major, and minor requirements.
