MA in Religion Science & Ethics at University of Leiden Netherlands

Friday, March 20th, 2009

Religions have an intellectual dimension, as beliefs about the world and moral convictions. These can be studied from an insider perspective (systematic theology, religious ethics) but also with somewhat more intellectual distance. Major questions that may be posed concern the internal coherence of religious beliefs and moral convictions. However, we are also interested in their interaction with knowledge and practices that are at first external to the beliefs themselves. Thus, we study various examples of the interplay of religious beliefs and practices with knowledge provided by the natural sciences, the impact of technology on the life world we live in, and the moral discourse and reflection in which secular and religious normative ideas interact with each other.

Alongside the engagement with beliefs and convictions there are more general questions, for instance about the nature of religious language, the methods we use to study and reflect upon religion, and the nature of ‘secular societies’. These reflections are also shaped by other disciplines in philosophy and cultural studies, such as philosophy of science and philosophical ethics.
