One of the main aims of the Department of Religion is to provide a comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of the complex religious reality in society today. To meet this aim, the department runs a postgraduate diploma in Religious Studies in addition to the already existing undergraduate, M. Phil and DPhil programmes.
This programme is intended to provide an opportunity for those who may have first degrees in any discipline and who would like to broaden their knowledge of religion and its functions in society. The diploma covers a wide range of courses drawn from various religious traditions and pertinent issues in the contemporary world.

Theology and Religious Studies has one of the largest number of postgraduates in the University and the largest in the School of European Culture and Languages. Postgraduates from around the world come to study in the historic city of Canterbury. The Cathedral, home to the Archbishop of Canterbury, and a series of excellent theological libraries make this a rich environment for studying applied theology.
We have an international research reputation in applied theology and ethics and the area of applied theology was given an excellent rating (‘flagged’) in the 2001 national Research Assessment Exercise. We offer the only course in Mysticism and Religious Experience in the UK and we have an original new MA in the Cultural Study of Cosmology and Divination.
