The Theology Department offers students a faithful but critical consideration of the Judeo-Christian tradition. The program provides a forum for considering the transcendent and ultimate questions of human existence and prepares men and women for a variety of ministries within the Church. The major and minor programs both require specific liberal education courses in history and philosophy.
Philosophy Minor
The Philosophy minor program gives students an opportunity to examine the fundamental questions of human existence through courses on great philosophical thinkers and important philosophical issues. The program places special emphasis on a knowledge of the historical origins of the Western philosophical tradition and on the development of skills of philosophical analysis.

Consistent with ULV’s church-related origins and values orientation, the Religion/Philosophy Department offers bachelor of arts degrees in
Religion, Philosophy, and Religion/Philosophy. A minor is also available in Religion or Philosophy. Religion courses offer the opportunity to explore religion and religious values in a critical, Christian context. Philosophy courses challenge students to look seriously at the philosophical traditions which have helped to shape our world views. In all courses emphasis is upon clear thinking and evaluation of a broad range of views with the goal of refining one’s own perspectives.
Off-campus religion programs are also offered to enable students in African-American and Latino communities of Los Angeles to pursue degrees in Religion and Philosophy. These courses are offered in Pasadena and central Los Angeles in the evenings and on Saturdays.

The singularity of Yeshiva University among institutions of higher learning stems from its dual cultural origins – the Yeshiva, where Torah is studied and from which Stern College derives its spiritual, moral and ethical core, and the University, resting upon a firm foundation of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The educational program at Stern College is the result of this partnership of Yeshiva and University, coupled with a commitment to excellence and a love of learning for its own sake – known in Jewish tradition as Torah Lishmah.
The Rebecca Ivry Department of Jewish Studies accommodates students from varied backgrounds and enables them to progress to more advanced levels. Through a wide variety of courses the student is prepared for independent study. The curriculum develops textual skills, breadth of knowledge and competence in the use of primary sources.

Our Religious Studies is dedicated to open inquiry into religion and theology as one of the significant areas of human life and as one key to our understanding of the world. Because religion is embedded in most of the world’s history, literature, and social institutions, its study offers access to a range of past and present human concerns. Religious Studies majors are invited to share in this study to develop critical and responsible standards of judgment and to gain an appreciation of the religious element in life. Because of the College’s Catholic origins and heritage, some courses focus on theology in the Roman Catholic tradition, while others focus on other religious traditions as well the particular facets of religious meaning and value.
