The Theology Department offers students a faithful but critical consideration of the Judeo-Christian tradition. The program provides a forum for considering the transcendent and ultimate questions of human existence and prepares men and women for a variety of ministries within the Church. The major and minor programs both require specific liberal education courses in history and philosophy.
Philosophy Minor
The Philosophy minor program gives students an opportunity to examine the fundamental questions of human existence through courses on great philosophical thinkers and important philosophical issues. The program places special emphasis on a knowledge of the historical origins of the Western philosophical tradition and on the development of skills of philosophical analysis.

The Tabor College Christian Ministries major means intellectual growth, intentional Christian discipleship, mentored character formation, and practical ministry training. Our goal is to equip and empower men and women for effective ministry in the church and in the world.
During the program, the Ministry Discernment Seminar offers a small group setting for reflection and interaction with peers in the process of discerning and sharpening a specific determination of God’s call.
In the Ministry Immersion option, another Tabor distinctive, students test and hone ministry skills for a semester plus a summer in a mentored church or mission experience.

Pastoral Ministry
The graduate program in pastoral ministry is designed to prepare men and women for service to the Catholic Church and its parish and school communities. Centered in a commitment to adult faith formation, the program welcomes individuals who feel called to deepen their faith and to acquire the knowledge and skills essential for leaders in the pastoral life of faith communities. Because it is designed to integrate the academic, human, and spiritual dimensions of faith formation, the pastoral ministry program seeks to provide students with the theological and spiritual backgrounds that are foundational to pastoral ministry.

Because Viterbo is a liberal arts university which is both Christian and Catholic, it has an obligation to provide courses in religious studies for its students. In a world becoming increasingly technological, men and women need the stabilizing and integrating experience of the Transcendent. Religious studies courses provide for both the inner search and outer exploration of the elements that are part and parcel of the human religious experience. Religious studies are not a desirable peripheral benefit of a college education at Viterbo; they form an integral and integrating core.
The religious studies department provides the professional academic background and experiential learning for those who choose a career within Church or Church-related programs.
The ministry program aims to prepare students for a fuller and more effective participation in the Church’s mission, i.e. to bring about the kingdom of God. It invites people to a deeper response to their baptismal call to the ministry and to a greater development of their personal gifts. In the context of a liberal arts education in a Christian community, the ministry major offers opportunities for personal growth in spirituality and in theological understanding. It encourages an integration of academic learning with experiential learning through reflection, dialogue, and cooperation with other church groups and programs.

In addition to the required internship, all BTH students are molded in ministry assignments throughout their time here at ANU. The program meets the requirements for the course of study for ordination in the Church of the Nazarene in the Africa Region.
