Objectives
Upon completion of the B.A.Min. degree with a Christian Counseling major, the student should be able to fulfill objectives in three domains: Cognitive, Behavioral, and Affective. Completion of the Christian Counseling program should enable students to:
Cognitive
Know oneself and the disciplines involved in personal growth.
Know the salient tenets of individual, group, and family counseling; human development and psychopathology; and professional and theological foundations of psychotherapy.
Behavioral
Demonstrate the philosophies, goals, and techniques of the major counseling theories.
Demonstrate the core counseling skills.
Affective
Experience an enhanced sense of personal authenticity and empathy in the care of humanity.
Intuit a range and depth of feelings in oneself and others.

The B.A.Min. degree with a Christian Counseling major is for those who wish to become more competent and confident in Christian counseling skills. Christian Counseling major course work will be completed in a cohort, with the program requiring commitment for four consecutive terns. For the counseling year, the student will meet three nights per week following the traditional trimester system, beginning with the fall trimester and concluding at the end of the following summer.

Persons may fulfill education requirements for ordination in the Church of the Nazarene either as elder or deacon by completing additional courses as listed at the end of this section.

The four-year Bachelor of Science degree requires 124 hours of study. Students develop a major in Bible (52 hours), along with a professional emphasis in one of the following seven areas: Preaching Ministry, Christian Counseling, Christian Education, Music Ministry, Cross-Cultural Ministry, Youth & Family Ministry, and General Ministry.
OBJECTIVES:
Students who complete a Bachelor of Science degree should . . .
Demonstrate a thorough working knowledge of the Bible and its essential doctrines; a comprehensive Christian worldview harmonizing significant historical, scientific, and philosophical issues with biblical truth; and proficiency in an area of professional study.
Develop skills in observation and interpretation, in critical and creative thinking; and in problem-solving, particularly in relationship to biblical exegesis and application.
Comprehend, embrace, and demonstrate the biblical principles of spirituality, morality, Christ-like character, and service as modeled and taught by Christ and His disciples.
Demonstrate familiarity with multiple methods of communication within a variety of settings; having as a communicator confidence to overcome apprehension, conviction to consider ethical implications, and commitment to utilizing opportunities for communication within the chosen area of leadership.
Understand the nature and demands of the Great Commission, be committed to personal discipleship and disciple-making, and participate in some way in the task of taking the Gospel to all the nations.

Students develop a major in Bible (52 hours), along with a professional emphasis in one of the following seven areas: Preaching Ministry, Christian Counseling, Christian Education, Cross-Cultural Ministry, Youth & Family Ministry, General Ministry, or Biblical Research. The purpose of the educational program of the Religion and Theology Degree is to provide Christ-centered, distinctively Seventh-day Adventist, clinically grounded theological education for students in preparation for pastoral ministry, evangelism, teaching, Christian counseling, and chaplaincy. The religion and theology program is designed to prepare individuals for effective service to God, church, and humanity. Specifically the program seeks to prepare students for entry-level practice in ministry and for seminary and graduate study in religion and theology in preparation for specialized ministry. The department serves the general student body of Oakwood University through the provision of religion and theology courses across the curriculum. The department also serves as a resource to all University departments for the promotion of faith and learning.
